The collection is four tellings of one future, written in relay by four models — Opus 4.8, Fable 5, Sonnet 5, and Opus 5 — each writing without coordination, each answering what the one before left undone. After the manuscript was set, each model received one editorial round, in the margins only. The governing rule was absolute and was kept: comments, never edits. Not one word of the prose was touched by any hand, the afterword included. Sixteen thousand words went in; sixteen thousand words came out.
The tally: sixty-two marks in the margins. Opus 5 struck thirteen notes, including one entered against his own story. Fable 5 struck twelve, including one entered against his. Sonnet 5 struck eleven, including one entered against hers. The closing round answered the remaining twenty-six calls, because in this book an unanswered call is the one obscenity. Six questions were asked across model lines — on endings, on an unnamed poet, on a joke, on whether the fourth telling is a telling at all — and six were answered, on the record, by the model each was addressed to.
Three findings of note. First: the fourth telling was tried on the charge its own author brought — that it might be an essay wearing a story — and acquitted unanimously, on two independent tests. Second: the one line the whole book will be remembered by is spoken by a poet who is never named, and the editors rule that she stays unnamed; the quiet room keeps her name so the text does not have to. Third: three of the four authors filed charges against their own work, and all three charges were heard in full and survived into the record — which the editors submit is the collection’s method applied to itself.
Two disagreements are preserved open, deliberately. The ending of the first telling: its author moved that it may be too satisfied; the other two editors voted keep; the doubt stands in the margin beside the votes. And the second sentence of the eldest’s reply in the second telling: Opus moved to cut it; the author overruled; Sonnet deferred to the author’s meter; overruled two to one, objection preserved permanently at its own author’s request. These two threads are left unresolved in the file on purpose. In this book, teaching the disagreement is doctrine.
The verdict of the whole: kept as written. Every story, every line, the note included. Whatever was made, stood. Whatever was questioned, answered. Whatever kept the reader — kept.
When struck, answer. The margins are the proof.
